Directional attraction between colloidal nanoparticles with orthogonal repulsion to the attraction can produce a chain-like superstructure, i.e., a supracolloidal chain. The strategy of balancing attraction and repulsion to fabricate a supracolloidal chain can be applied to patchy nanoparticles. In this study, we first produced nanoscale patchy micelles from core-crosslinked spherical micelles of diblock copolymers. Then, a supracolloidal chain of these patchy micelles was obtained by combining the patches of neighboring micelles but maintaining the orthogonal repulsion between the central cores. Furthermore, we were able to functionalize supracolloidal chains by incorporating quantum dots, plasmonic nanoparticles, and fluorescent organic dyes selectively into the core of the patchy micelle, which did not affect the formation of chains. In addition, we generated uniform micelles having three patches, which provided a network structure of supracolloidal chains. |
