Proteins are essential material in nature, since they have important role in all living organisms. Besides their physiological role, proteins are important constructing material in many organisms also. For example, collagen is found in tendon, bone, and ligaments where high tenacity is required and elastin is found in arteries and skins where high elasticity is required. Silk spun by silkworm and spider have also excellent physical properties which meet the requirements in textiles. However, the cost and quantity of proteins should be considered seriously to use protein as a commodity material. Many plants synthesize proteins and usually these proteins are produced as byproducts during the food processing. Utilization of these proteins would be beneficial because it could be produced at low cost and in high quantity. In this presentation, we will introduce various types of protein available from agricultural product and how they could be applied into the materials world. |
