In this paper,to overcome shortcomings of previous methods, we propose a direct method for estimating SOPTD model parameters for the automatic design of the PID controller. This method can utilize any type of test signal generator and remove initial value effect. Even though the proposed method doesn*t need any complicated numerical technique it provides better model accuracy than previous methods. Also, the autotuned PID controller based on the obtained model gives much better control performances than those of previous methods.
