Boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) is a structural analog of carbon nanotube having a comparable thermal conductivity (K). However, BNNT is an insulator while CNT is metallic or semiconducting dependent on its chirality. In these regards, BNNT is useful as a heat-dissipation material where electrical insulation is required. BNNT purified from as-synthesized BNNT from a ball milling-annealing process is used in this study. Purity and morphology of BNNT were analyzed by SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy. Purified BNNT was mixed as a filler with epoxy resin and K was measured by LFA. We found BNNT enormously enhanced of K of the epoxy composite. It increased over 50 % even when less than 2 wt% of the purified BNNT was added. And the effect of BNNT became more dramatically shown when small amount of BNNT was added to epoxy composite previously filled with alumina nanoparticles. |
