Janus particles, having unique properties due to the biphasic geometry of distinct chemical composition, have received great attention for applications to colloidal surfactants, chemical and biological sensors, display materials, and controlled releases. This study introduces a facile and straightforward approach for fabrication of uniform magnetic Janus microparticles. We generate biphasic emulsion templates, consisting of a magnetic hydrogel phase and an ionic polymer phase, in a capillary-based microfluidic device. We control the degree of Janusity of the particles by precision control over the flow rates of the two inner fluids that are injected from a theta shaped round capillary. Consecutive UV irradiation leads formation of biphasic Janus microparticles. Finally we demonstrate the magnetic Janus microparticles can be used for 2D colloidal array under designed magnetic field. |
