The silicon atom is known to have a considerably high chemical affinity for oxygen atom because of the variable covalency. For this reason, acrylate compounds containing silicon atom have been widely used as monomers for preparing a contact lens with a high oxygen permeability. Thiol-ene reaction is easy to initiate and has a high yield, and has an advantage that a desired structure can be easily incorporated into the polymer chain. In this study, liquid prepolymers were synthesized through a thiol-ene reaction of a divinyl compound having a siloxane linkage with a dithiol compound. Subsequently, the prepolymers were subjected to bulk polymerization with a multi-functional cross-linker compound in a mold to obtain lenses. The oxygen permeability, water uptake rate, and surface contact angle of these lenses were evaluated. |
