In our previous study, while surface treatment of thepolymerizable chelating agent acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate prevented titaniumdioxide nanoparticles from aggregating, they precipitated readily in bothhydrophilic and hydrophobic dispersion media. This was resolved bycopolymerizing acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate with methylmethacrylate oracrylic acid. Surface morphology and chemical composition, dispersion viscosity, sedimentation rate, and UV screening capacity of the surface treated nanoparticlesin the media were investigated. As a result, as well as low aggregation, thesenanoparticles showed substantially delayed sedimentation rate, implying gooddispersion stability. Consequently, the surface treatment increased the UVprotection factor of titanium dioxide nanoparticles by 500%. |
