The alkyl acrylate copolymer (ACM) rubbers were synthesized through semibatch emulsion copolymerization. Semibatch copolymerization system should be employed to have the copolymer composition identical to the monomer composition. Ethyl acrylate (EA), butyl acrylate (BA), and methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) were used as monomer and maleic acid was used as functional monomer. Tetramethyl ethylene diamine (TMEDA) and ammonium persulfate (APS) were used as oxidant and reducing agent, respectively. The rate of polymerization (Rp) increased with the addition of emulsifier up to 10wt.% of solvent by increased the number of micelle particles. When the initiator concentration was smaller than 0.4 wt.% of solvent, the ACM rubber was not synthesized. In this case, copolymer composition was non-identical and monomer flooded condition was appeared. The glass transition temperature of the ACM rubber generally followed the Fox equation. As the temperature decreased, Mooney viscosity increased. |
