Surface-initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Bactericidal Phosphonium Salts in the presence of Nitrogen-based Ligands as Reducing Agents |

One of methods to prevent bacterial contamination on surfaces is to kill bacteria by disrupting cell membrane once they adhere to surfaces. In this study, phosphonium salt was selected as a bactericidal material that showed higher bactericidal activity than the polymeric quaternary ammonium salts. The bactericidal polymer was grafted from silicon oxide surfaces via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by using aliphatic ligands to convert deactivator copper (II) to activator copper (I) species. The different aliphatic ligands such as TMEDA, PMDETA, HMTETA were used and the polymer grafting was controllable depending on the used ligand: the thickest polymeric film was obtained when PDMETA was used. It was meaningful that the polymer grafting was successful with a significantly low concentration of copper catalyst. The bactericidal effect of the polymeric films was investigated with E. Coli. |
