Applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling on Microchannel Unit Operations for Offshore Plants |

Offshore plants are natural gas processing plants located at remote locations and have been a more practical choice over onshore plants. Various unit operations in topside processes are verified or modeled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD have been gaining global attention because of its versatility in modelling multiple processes and is a cost-effective method of designing and testing reactors and equipment before these are constructed. Design parameters are vital for optimizing reactors in floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) systems with limited space. In this study, microchannel reactor for methanol synthesis was modeled using CFD. We evaluated the effect of various parameters in the design model, and validated it using the reaction kinetics obtained from experimental results. Microchannel reactors provide advantages of designing smaller, inexpensive equipment to synthesize hydrocarbons on FPSOs. |
