The regulation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration in the human body is very important because it can cause oxidative stress and inflammation in the human body, leading to many diseases. We present a new approach for the simultaneous exfoliation and functionalization of transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets (TMD NSs), including MoS2, WS2, MoSe2, and WSe2, in an aqueous solution, and demonstrate their application for the prolonged and effective scavenging of various ROS. TMD NSs were exfoliated and functionalized by a diblock copolymer, poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL-b-PEG), and the resulting TMD NSs showed excellent antioxidant activities for superoxide, hydroxyl, and ABTS radicals. The experiment and DFT simulation results found that the ROS scavenging took place through electron transfer from the TMD NSs to the ROS. Finally, the TMD NSs antioxidants were able to scavenge cellular ROS in HaCaT human keratinocytes without any cytotoxicity. |
