Glycerol has emerged as an industrially important bio-resource which can be converted into the profitable chemicals such as allyl alcohol, acrolein, glycerol carbonate, glycidol and polyglycerol. Glycerol derivatives have been used for cosmetics, food additives, pharmaceuticals and plasticizers. The etherification reaction of glycerol using acetate salts as catalysts is difficult to be controlled. To enhance the yield and selectivity of di- and triglycerol, protic ionic liquids were added as co-catalysts. In order to investigate the role of protic ionic liquids, several reaction conditions such as the amount of protic ionic liquid, reaction time and reaction temperature were altered. |
