In this study, we analyzed polystyrene-graft-polyisoprene (PS-g-PI) which was prepared by tailored anionic polymerization to yield precisely spaced graft chains. It was difficult to characterize this graft copolymer having various side products by conventional characterization methods based on size exclusion chromatography (SEC) since SEC separates polymers by size only. To obtain more detailed information, we carried out two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) which is a combination of adequately selected two different LC modes. We used interaction chromatography (IC) or liquid chromatography at the critical condition (LCCC) as the first dimensional separation, LCCC or SEC as the second dimensional separation. 2D-LC results from various combinations of SEC, IC and LCCC were compared. |
