Mixed Bed Ion Exchange for Sodium Removal with Incomplete Regeneration of Cation Resin |
초록 |
Amixed bed ion exchange unit is prepared by intimate mixing of cation and anion resin in the same column and particularly used to produce ultrapure water. A key operating issue is the operating time until the breakthrough of an interesting ion and after the time, the resins must be removed from service and regenerated. The regeneration of strong-acid cation resin is performed by removing sodium from the resin surface using HCl solution. However, as a resultof incomplete regeneration, some portion of the resinsurface is taken by sodium.Typically sodium is the first ion to leave the column. If not caught in time, sodium can contribute to erosion and corrosion problems within the steam cycle. In order to evaluate the impact of incomplete resin regeneration, a series of column tests were performed with different initial sodium loading 9.13%, 7.39%, and 2.0%. Experimental results indicated sodium leakagereached 1.0ppbin 3.8days for 9.13%, 3.9 days for 7.39%, and 6.2 days for 2.0%. The time to reach 1.0ppb sodium leakagewas shorter with higher sodium loaded columns. The experiment breakthrough occurred sooner thanthe predicted by a mathematical model although the trends of order are the same. |
