Seawater Supply Method using Wave-powered Pump to Improve Biomass Productivity in Selectively-permeable Membrane Photobioreactors |

Nutrient supply is essential for the cultivation of microalgae. Utilization of nutrients in seawater could improve sustainability and economic feasibility of biofuels from microalgae. Photobioreactor using a selectively-permeable membranes (SPMs) exchanges seawater and nutrients from environment. In SPM-PBRs, additional supplement of seawater could increase biomass productivity. Using natural energy is necessary to prevent the increase of production cost. In this study, a wave-powered pump was developed in order to provide floating SPM-PBRs with nutrients for microalgae. The marine microalga, Tetraselmis sp. MBEyh01L, was cultivated in floating SPM-PBRs located in a simulated ocean condition. There are comparison between performance of the wave-powered pump and that of electrical pump. The results showed that the wave-powered pump was as effective as electric pump for enhancing algal biomass productivity. |
