Eight percent of obese patients have diabetes, so bariatric surgeries have the limelight, which means removing or bypass a part of the intestine in order to avoid being stimulated by nutrients. However, these therapies have side effects, such as thrombosis, hemorrhage, and even death. Therefore, we introduced photodynamic therapy (PDT) using a minimally invasive procedure. We modified a photosensitizer to target endocrine cells involved in obesity and diabetes. The photosensitizers were spread onto the surface of the intestine, irradiated endoscopic laser, and induce cellular death. Accordingly, endo-laparoscopic PDT was demonstrated in high-fat-diet mouse model through weight loss, fat loss, and blood glucose lever. |
