Removal of lead ions using PAN/HAp composite fibers through fixed bed column |

Composite sorbents of poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) for removal of heavy metals from industrial and agricultural wastewater has been investigated. PAN/HAp composite fibers were prepared by wet extrusion process from PAN/HAp/DMF dope. The composite fibers showed highly porous structure with more than 85% porosity. It was found that the composite fibers could adsorb lead up to 60% of the fiber weight. The lead was proved to be adsorbed in the composite fibers as a form of Pb5(PO4)3Cl crystals which implies that the adsorption happened through the metal ion exchange between Ca2+ in the apatite and Pb2+ in the solution.
