The ternary system of SAN, PVC, and organoclay in the form of intercalated nanocomposites was prepared by solution blending of SAN, PVC and organoclay, followed by melt mixing using a Brabender mixer. The binary systems of SAN/organoclay and PVC/organoclay were separately prepared by a solvent casting method using THF as the cosolvent. The Organoclay content in the nanocomposite was optimized by analyzing the XRD data. DSC was utilized to confirm the miscibility of SAN/PVC blends. The values of the interaction parameter (χab) and the interaction energy density (B) were calculated using by using the molar attraction constants of the specific functional groups derived from the Hoy’s table. The microstructure and the clay distribution in the nanocomposite were observed by SEM and TEM. The wetting coefficient was estimated by contact angle measurement and the Young’s equation. The thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposite were measured by TGA and UTM. |
