제목 | Morpho-Butterfly's Color originated from Specific Nano-Disorders - Approaches from Basic Science and Application Technologies - |
초록 | Morpho butterfly’s brilliant blue wing is well known as an example of the strucural color. However, their pigment-free coloration is mysterious for physics, because it has both high reflectivity (>60%) and a single color in too wide angular range (> ±40° from the normal), which is not consistent with the interference. We have proven the principle of the mystery by extracting the physical essence, and emulating the nanostructures using nanofabrication techniques. The key was a fine blending of contradicting factors (both ordered and disordered structures) at nanometer scale (Fig.1, center part) [1]. The artificial Morpho-color was found to concern wide applications, because it can produce a single color in wide angular range with high reflectivity. Also it makes colors impossible by pigment, and is resistant to fading from a chemical change over longtime. However, we must surmount "death valleys" for wide applications (Fig.1). A serious problem was low throughput of the nano-patterning by usual lithography process, which was solved by nano-imprinting technique. Also fabrication in large area was newly realized by using a laser process. Next attempts are to control the optical properties in both of angular distribution and colors. For the controllability, we needed precise simulation that has been difficult due to disorders in the structure. However, recent numerical method enabled us to approach the complex structures and to analyze the optical role of the randomness that is interesting for basic science, too. Also further steps are in progress (Fig.1). [1] A.Saito, S.Kinoshita et al.: Proc.SPIE 5526B, 2004, 188-194; Patent (2001-241496, 2003-391572). -90 0 90 Refl.
