제목 Metal Structures for Photonics and Plasmonics
초록 Hybrid photon-electron waves known as surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) can be excited on metallic surfaces. Since manipulating SPPs allows concentration of light below the optical diffraction limit and generation of large electric-field enhancements in confined regions, SPP engineering via structured metals has been extensively investigated. An increase in the SPP propagation length can lead to desirable exploitation of SPPs. However, the SPP propagation length is restricted by the ohmic loss. Also, inhomogeneities of the metallic surfaces arising from surface roughness and grain boundaries act as scattering centers which hinder the propagation of SPPs. In this talk, I will discuss fundamental issues of SPP engineering via metal structures, particularly focused on (i) the influence of inhomogeneities in metallic films on the SPP propagation length, (ii) novel fabrication methods for plasmonic metal structures, and (iii) their practical application.
