Ion-Containing Polymer Energy Materials: insights from Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy |

For advanced energy storage devices, it is vital to utilize single-ion polymer conductors (ionomers) that have anions covalently bonded to polymers. This obviates the concentration polarization caused by accumulation/depletion of anions at the electrodes, allowing the highest power density and recharging rates available in Li ion batteries. We synthesize polysiloxane-based ionomers with low glass transition temperatures and high dielectric constant where the sole mobile ion is Li+. The principal focus of this presentation is on the insight that broadband dielectric spectroscopy brings to our understanding of ion and polymer dynamics of this family of materials. Dielectric spectroscopy was used to determine the number density of conducting ions and their mobility from electrode polarization. This experimental work concludes that the number density of conducting ions is tiny in such ionomers, and SAXS reveals that a large portion of the ions are aggregated. Understanding experimental observations of dielectric constant and conductivity of the ionomers provides useful insights for the design of single-ion conductors for energy applications. |
