While most of the extensive previous work on catalysts for polylactide has been focused on late transition metal or main group catalysts, much less attention has been directed toward the early transition metal catalysts, especially Group 4 or 5 metal alkoxides. We will show that several titanium or tantalum alkoxides can facilitate the living polymerization of l-lactide and rac-lactide in toluene solution at various polymerization temperatures via coordination insertion mechanism. Also, we will discuss the dependence of the controlled polymerization on the number of titanium metal centers in the complex. |
