The molecular structures of the photochromic materials are changed by irradiating UV/vis light resulting in photoisomerization. These characteristics can be applied to liquid crystal, micellar catalysis, photofoam, and gel. One of the typical photochromic groups is azobenzene. Photoresponsive anionic surfactant, N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-N-(alkyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl) aminopropyl sulfonate (GnAZ0AS, n = 4, 6, 8, 12, 14), has been synthesized with azobenzene derivatives. All of the trans-GnAZ0AS surfactants were isomerized to cis/trans mixtures containing 92.5% of cis isomer by UV light (λ = 350 nm) and the cis isomer was reconverted again to 74 % of trans isomer by vis light (λ > 450 nm). The cmc value of trans-GnAZ0AS were 6.03 x 10-3 to 6.40 x 10-5 mol L-1, and those of cis-GnAZ0AS were 1.02 x 10-2 to 1.82 x 10-4 mol L-1. |
