제목 | Catalytic functions of cobalt nitrides and carbon hybrids for rechargeable metal-air batteries |
초록 | Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have continued to draw vast attention as a promising energy storage devices in areas ranging from small portable electric devices to the large-scale power systems such as electrical vehicles. However, the maximum energy density of current LIBs involving a topotactic transition chemistry is still not sufficient to meet the continuous demands of large power application. Among the emerging battery technologies, metal-air batteries (MABs) with distinctive conversion chemistry are under intense research and development focus due to their large theoretical energy density, but there are still numerous technical challenges associated with air cathode and metal anode to overcome for commercialization. In this presentation, I would provide the fundamentals and current issues of the air cathodes in MABs such as Li-air and Zn-air batteries. For improving the performance of MABs, a new class of combination, i.e., cobalt nitrides (Co4N) nanorods and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as a catalyst-current collector integrated monolithic air cathode will be introduced. We examine its structural features and distinctive bifunctional catalytic functions in both nonaqueous and aqueous cells. The hierarchically assembled Co4N/CNF hybrid renders facile mass conduction such as oxygen and metal ions by forming numerous three-phase interfaces. Density functional studies elucidate that the facile oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) during discharge and charge is attributed to the favorable adsorption energies on the oxidized surface of Co4N, tailored interfaces between CNFs and supported Co4N. This study offers a new insight to understand the unique role of catalysts and provides a guideline to design an air cathode for reversible MABs. |
