Cellulose acetate can be a good carrier of the nonlinear chromophore, because its derivatives are relatively rigid due to the glucose units. In order to achieve a stability of the nonlinear polymer the crosslinking step of cellulose acetate with nonlinear optical chromophore is very important. UV-radiation is a very simple and an effective curing method compared with other curing methods. Here, cellulose acetate and a nonlinear optical chromophore, dispersed red 19 (DR 19), were modified with N-methylol-acrylamide (NMA) in acid catalyzed condition. FT-IR and 1H-NMR were employed to confirm the formation of the modified cellulose acetate with DR 19. In addition, the thermal stability and electrooptic coefficient (r13) of the photocrosslinkable polymeric system were also characterized. |
