Nafion® gives the relatively high conductivity only in the presence of water, this is the main obstacle to develop high temperature PEMFC. Nafion® has a drawback of abrupt increase in resistance above 100 ℃ due to dehydration of membrane. To ensure high proton conductivity at high temperatures or low humid conditions, we studied the blended membrane by poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS). PDMS has been widely used in various applications due to thermal and chemical stability and low price. PDMS is intrinsically hydrophobic but it can be modified to be amphiphilic by substituting end groups with hydrophilic phosphorous groups. Phosphorous groups presents the relatively high proton conductivity without water because of its self dissociation natures. In the temperature ranges from 60 ℃ ~ 120 ℃, a nanoporous membrane showed high proton conductivity which was comparable with maximum conductivity of Nafion®. And The Nafion®/PDMS membrane shows better performances than Nafion® at 120 ℃. |
