Preparation and Characterization of Sericin/Silica Composite using Fractionated sericin by Ethanol |

Sericin is minor protein of silk proteins and has unusual high content of serine and threonine. We previously found that sericin can synthesize silica directly from TEOS without any pretreatment. These are similar to silicatein from marine sponges which found increasing application in various fields. We expect that sericin can be a cheaper alternative of silicatein. Silica particles in nanometer scale were found at the beginning of silica formation in the presence of sericin. To find the role of sericin during the silica synthesis, we fractionated sericin by the addition of ethanol to sericin solution. As the amount of ethanol was increased, the molecular weight of precipitated sericin has decreased. In this study, we tried to make sericin/silica nanocomposite using ethanol-precipitated sericin by the addition of different amount of ethanol. We examined the effective fraction of sericin for the synthesis of silica and its amino acid composition was characterized. |
