Preparation and Characterization of SiC and TiC Coated Carbon Fiber |

The major drawback to the use of carbon fibers embedded or not in a ceramic matrix is their low oxidation resistance. Once the temperature is above 400 C, the carbon fibers react with oxygen and rapidly burn away with an oxidation rate increasing quickly above 500 C. Such a drawback could be overcome by protecting the carbon by a ceramic matrix which acts as a diffusion barrier between oxygen and the carbon surface. In this work, SiC, TiC and mixed carbide SiC/TiC coating on the carbon fiber was obtained, through the infiltration of the SiO2, TiO2 and a mixed oxide SiO2/TiO2 onto carbon fiber by dip coating method and they were carried out in a furnace under an argon flow at above 1400℃. The crystalline structure and morphology of the as-prepared SiC and TiC coating was measured by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS). TGA was carried out to investigate the oxidation behavior under static air, at a rate of 10℃/min. |
