Highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous MCM-41 has been synthesized and functionalized with 2-ureylene-pyridine (Pyu-MCM-41) in a two step modification process. The synthesized material has been characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), solid state 29Si MAS and 13C CP-MAS NMR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a potential application, the synthesized and characterized material has been utilized for the effective removal of heavy metal ions from water and sea water. It is found that the synthesized material has been found to have high metal ion selectivity and extractability, and hence good potential as an alternative to established solvent extraction systems. |
