We demonstrate all nanocrystal (NC) and solution based high performance wearable strain sensors. We incorporate insulating artificial atoms of ZnO quantum dot NCs into metallic ITO NC thin film matrix to design transparent metal-insulator heterostructures for resistive strain gauge layers, engineering the charge transport behavior and enhancing the sensitivity. We adopt nanocrack formation by applying high pre-strain in order to further the sensitivity. The structural, chemical, optical, electrical and electromechanical properties of these NC thin films are investigated. Finally, we fabricate solution processed transparent strain sensors that effectively detect the pulse on the wrist, and the vibration of vocal cords, providing a pathway to designing low cost and high performance electronic skins. |
