Synthesis of Negative Poission Ratio Polymers through Molecular Design |

Polymeric materials naturally become thinner when stretched, which is the behavior of a material having a positive Poisson ratio. In contrast, a negative Poisson ratio (NPR) polymer would expand laterally when stretched. Previously proposed molecular designs for NPR polymers have been based on an inverted honeycomb molecular structure. However these structures have difficulty in the combination of chemistry and mechanics to achieve NPR properties. Furthermore, the highly cross-licked honeycomb structure could lead to a high melting temperature and poor tractability. In this study, we employ a simple molecular design approach based on site-connectivity driven rod reorientation in main chain. The laterally attached rods lie parallel to the polymer chain direction before orientation. Under tensile force, the extension of the flexible spacers in the polymer main chain will force the laterally attached rods perpendicular to the stretching direction leading to an increase interchain separation and thereby to an NPR response. Designed monomer structure was synthesized and investigated by NMR, IR, Mass spectrum. |
