5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and its derivatives have currently received much attention as novel biomass-derived chemicals due to shortage of traditional energy sources and their environmental consideration. In this study, 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) and 5-hydroxymethylfuranoic acid (HMFA) were synthesized via modified Cannizzaro reactions of HMF. The reactions proceeded efficiently under solvent-free conditions, or in the presence of additives such as water-stable Lewis acids and phase transfer catalysts. |
