In plastic and restructive surgery, self-inflating hydrogel expanders are used to augment soft-tissue space. Hydrogels may have a great potential as osmotically driven self-inflatable devices in tissue expansion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the swelling properties and the biocompatibility of materials for tissue expanding. The hydrogel, which takes up water by osmosis, was synthesized via a radical crossliking reacton of copolymer(MMA and VP). To study the swelling and pressure properties of the material, and anhydrous gel cylinders were equilibrated in saline(0.9% saline). The cytotoxicity was investigated in L929 cell culture. The hydrogel has a swelling capacity(Q) of 4 to 8. The hydrogel fabricated using a copolymer of MMA and VP was thought to be useful for tissue expansion or the biomedical application due to their biocompatibility, sufficient swelling pressure and elasticity. |
