A series of waterborne polyurethane using castor oil based polyol and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) as chain extender (CWPU) were prepared via a two-step process. Initially, the prepolymer was reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), poly (tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG), 1,4-butanediol (BD) and dimethylol butanoic acid (DMBA). Polymerizations were carried out with various contents of castor oil based polyol and HEA. The structure, thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting CWPU films have been investigated by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and universal testing machine (UTM). Films were subsequently incubated in phosphate buffer saline solution (PBS) followed by biodegradability tests. Biodegradability indicates weight loss due to the fast degradation increased as the amount of ester group of castor oil. |
