High barrier elastomers are useful for automotive and medical applications such as fuel hose, medical packaging, stopper, and so on. Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are melt processible material with elastomeric properties like a vulcanized rubber. It is desirable to develop high barrier TPEs in order to replace the thermoset type butyl rubber. Among several TPEs, poly(ether-b-amide) (PEBA) multiblock copolymer having semicrystalline nylon as a hard segment, may exhibit high barrier properties by varying the length and type of the nylon hard segment. In this study, we synthesized PEBA TPEs having m-xylene diamine (MXD) nylon (MXD12 and MXD10) as a hard segment by melt polycondensation of α,ω-dicarboxyl MXD nylon oligomers with PTMG. The MXD based PEBA with low HS content (about 30wt%) exhibit good elastic recoverability and melt processibility along with high oxygen barrier property comparable to that of butyl rubber. |
