In photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, BiVO4 has been considered as the most promising photoanode material among all metal oxide semiconductors. Up to now, although various strategies have been tried to enhance the photocatalytic performance of BiVO4, the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of BiVO4 has not yet reached the level of commercialization. To make a breakthrough, it is required to study fundamental characteristics of BiVO4. To do that, it is necessary to demonstrate high quality epitaxial films-based photoelectrodes. In this presentation, we introduce several important experimental results about epitaxial BiVO4 photoelectrodes. First, we report on an high-quality epitaxial BiVO4/Bi4V2O11 type-II heterojunction thin-film photoanode which shows significantly enhanced photocurrent density. Furthermore, we report on enhanced photocurrent density in epitaxial BiVO4 (010) thin film due to extended hole diffusion length. |
