Representative hydrocarbon traps adsorb HCs at low-temperature section and release it over the active temperature range of the three-way catalyst. In this study, we designed an HC trap that can oxidize HCs at low temperatures, and to achieve this, we added Cu+ ions to MFI zeolite. To explain the effect of the zeolite support, cation A-form and cation B-form MFI zeolites were used as supports. Interestingly, in cation A-form MFIs, CuO particles were formed on the outer surface, but in cation B-form MFIs, small CuO particles were formed on the outer surface and Cu+ ions were impregnated inside the zeolite. Accordingly, the Cu/cation B-form MFI showed much improved efficiency comparative to representative HCs. We also demonstrated a correlation between the CST performances and physiochemical properties of Cu/MFI zeolites. Finally, the small CuO particles of Cu/cation B-form MFI exhibit effective oxidation capacity at low temperatures, thus creating an active HC trap performance. |
