The hazardous effects along with non-biodegradability of toxic heavy metal ions such as Hg2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+ present in waste water, produced by chemical, electronics, metallurgical and machine manufacturing industries, are posing a serious threat to our environment and human health. Copper is one of the most toxic metals that slowly accumulate in the bodies of living creatures. Water containing copper beyond the prescribed limit of 1.3 mg/L causes lung cancer and liver damage in human beings. Ordered mesoporous silica adsorbents have many advantages such as ordered periodic pore structure, high hydrothermal and chemical stabilities, good accessibility of active sites, rapid mass transport inside the nano structures and exceptionally high surface areas. Functionalized mesoporous silica materials with various chelating agents are constantly utilized as adsorbents to achieve high selectivity of the metal ions adsorption. |
