In this study, we quantitatively investigated the thin films of polythiophene derivatives, poly(3-(4′-(3″,7″-dimethyloctoxy)phenyl)thiophene) (P3PhT) and poly(3-(4′-(3″,7″-dimethyloctoxy)-3′-pyridinyl)thiophene) (P3PyT). Using grazing incidence wide angle X-ray measurement, these polymers form multilayer structures whose layers stacked normal to the film plane in the thin film. These multilayered structures consisted of two sublayers, amorphous and ordered sublayer. Interestingly, in the case of P3PhT, the ordered sublayer was originated from laterally stacked 3-phenylthiophene backbone chains. However, in the case of P3PyT case, the ordered sublayer consisted of thiophene backbone chains without the pyridinyl linker. The formation of the ordered sublayer led a longer π-conjugation length which was reflected in their optical and electronic properties. |
