Poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) polyols were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of propylene oxide (PO) using polypropylene glycol (PPG-400D) as an initiator in the presence of double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst. Two different kinds of DMC catalysts Zn/Co and Co/Co were prepared by reacting ZnCl2 or CoCl2 with K3[Co(CN)6], together with complexing agent and co-complexing agent. The resulting polyols are analyzed by using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. Among of two DMC catalysts, Zn/Co DMC catalyst shows high catalytic activity for ROP of PO to form the corresponding PPO polyol with high molecular weight (Mn = 3941) and with narrow polydispersity (PDI = 1.12). Furthermore, the Co/Co DMC catalyst also showed good catalytic activity for the polymerization. All the results indicated that simply changing catalyst formulation by choosing different metal salts, catalytic activity could be tuned. |
