Fluorescent Supracolloidal Chains of Functionalized Diblock Copolymer Micelles |

Various superstructures can be induced from self-assemblies of nanoscale colloidal building blocks. Chemical properties of colloidal building blocks can be preserved in supracolloidal structures so that characteristics of the structures can be tuned by incorporating functional species into the colloidal building blocks. Recently we demonstrated that anisotropic patched micelles can be induced from core-crosslinked micelles of diblock copolymers and polymerized to a supracolloidal chain by changing the polarity of the solvent non-preferable to the patches but preferable to the crosslinked core. In this study, we applied the same protocol to fluorophore-functionalized diblock copolymer micelles. These fluorescent colloidal building blocks were converted to anisotropic patched micelles and self-assembled into supracolloidal chains exhibiting fluorescence. In addition, we controlled the emission colors from fluorescent supracolloidal chains by using micelles having different fluorophores. |
