The synthesis of transport fuels from lignocellulosic biomass encompasses the utilization and upgrading of intermediate chemical platforms to higher carbon precursors. In this work, the cross-condensation of 2-methylfuran with furfural, and self-condensation of 2-methylfuran to produce C15 ketones were investigated. Different types of sulfonic acid catalysts supported on nanofibrous silica (KCC-1) were synthesized. The catalysts were characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, TGA, FT-IR and EDX. 56% conversion of 2-MF and 100% selectivity to C15 were obtained in the self-condensation reaction. In the cross-condensation, it was possible to attain 93.7% and 100% conversion of 2-methylfuran and furfural with 100% selectivity to C15.
