Fabrication and evaluation of inorganic–organic nanocomposite proton exchange membranes using modified inorganic silica nanoparticles |

Inorganic/organic nanocomposite membrane containing High silica nanoparticle content (32-36wt%) were fabricated through cross-linking polymerization of 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and sodium styrene sulfonate (NaSS) and surface modified silica nanoparticles. These membranes were prepared to evaluate the possibility of use as a proton exchange membrane for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Physio-chemical properties of the composite membranes were characterized by AFM, TGA, XRD, FT-IR, SEM and water uptake. Higher silica loadings in the composite membranes demonstrated a larger contribution to lowering the methanol crossover. Proton conductivity of the composite membranes decreased with increasing silica content. |
