Natural melanins (NMs), biosynthesized with L-tyrosine or L-dopa in creatures such as cuttlefish, have electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, and other unique properties. Because of its spherical shape (diameter in 100 ~ 150 nm), the NMs are difficult to form percolative networks for the electrical device applications. In this research, we fabricated electrically conductive NM / poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites whose structures show tightly aggregated packing by electrostatically balanced drying method. The electrical conductivity of our composite was several times higher than the previously reported composites. From this result, the NMs will open a new road to build biocompatible functional devices such as in the applications of implantable electrodes and neural interface. |
