Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) is widely used in the pharmaceutical and biomedical areas due to their physical and biological properties, including high solubility in water and organic solvents, and low toxicity. PEO can be modified through chain-end functionalization during its synthesis from ethylene oxide(EO) through living anionic polymerization, which is efficiently initiated by alkali metal alkoxides. In this study, we report the use of sodium azide as the anionic initiator for the polymerization of EO. The resulting polymeric alkoxide was terminated with several electrophiles to obtain α-azido based heterotelechelic PEOs. The fuctionalization yield was very efficient (over 98 mol%), and this method constitutes an excellent methods for preparing heterobifuctional PEOs having a wide range of molecular weights. |
