Lanthanide(III) ion complexes have diverse applications in optoelectronics due to their unique luminescent properties. Through the sensitization of chromophoric ligands of the complexes, sharp and long-lasting emissions of lanthanide(III) ions can be obtained efficiently. We prepared complexes containing Eu(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Er(III), and Tm(III) ions and investigated their self-assembly behaviors and optical properties. The lanthanide(III) complexes with Eu(III), Tb(III), and Tm(III) showed liquid crystalline properties. The Er(III) complex formed organogels. The Er(III) ion is widely used in telecommunication as a doping agent because the emission wavelength of Er(III) at 1.54 µm coincides with an optical transmission window in silica glass fibers. An organogel of the Er(III) complex was prepared in ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate and UV-polymerized to give a cross-linked polymer film. Optical properties of the organogel and the film were investigated. |
