The hydrocarbon-based ionomer is a promising electrolyte membrane for both polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and vanadium redox flow battery due to low cost, excellent mechanical and thermal stability, etc. Studies have been reported that by altering the architecture of the hydrocarbon-based PEM, the problematic low conductivity can be improved to that of the perfluorosulfonic ionomer. Concentring sulfonic acid in a polymer chain is a strategy for increasing ion conductivity. Poly(arylene ether sulfone) with controlled ratio of hydroxy group was synthesized, and multi phenyl pendant moiety was attached to the polymer backbone. Poly(arylene ether sulfone) with densely sulfonated pendant group was synthesized by post-sulfonation method. The chemical structures was confirmed by 1H-NMR analysis, and proton conductivity was measured for membranes with different IEC. |
