The utilization of glycerol as a renewable chemical has been increasingly important because large amounts of glycerol are formed as a byproduct from biodiesel production. We investigated enzymatic synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol and dimethyl carbonate in solvent-free system. Various lipases have been tested for their activity for glycerol carbonate synthesis, and lipase of Candida antartica was selected as the biocatalyst. To overcome immiscibility of glycerol in the solvent-free system, silica gel was used for solid support, which clearly improved the production of glycerol carbonate. The reaction conditions were optimized to enhance the yield and rate of glycerol carbonate. |
