Mechanical Properties and Micro Structure of WC – TiC - Co Hard Metal by Spark Plasma Sintering Method |

WC has a high hardness and a wear resistance with a good wettability by molten metals. Especially Co is the most used metallic to improve its toughness. And it is a sintering aid material to decrease sintering temperature by liquid phase sintering. Spark plasma sintering method has emerged as a useful technique to density the powder like WC which has high melting temperature. It is sintered at relatively low temperature and shorter time because of activating a high-voltage pulse current with the pressure between grain gaps in the powder. Densification by SPS is extremely fast compared to conventional sintering methods applying external pressure such as Hot Pressure (HP) or Hot-Isostatic-Pressure (HIP). And sintered materials have more good properties than conventional sintering methods. In this study, WC–x wt.%TiC-1 wt.%Co composites were sintered by spark plasma sintering method. These WC–TiC-Co composite can be densified by liquid phase sintering method. The mechanical properties of these composites were affected by their composition and microstructure. Especially the grain size of the carbide phase relate with mechanical properties. Thus, the grain growth of the carbide phase must be controlled during liquid phase sintering. |
