Dewar Benzene as a Versatile Platform for Synthesizing Conjugated Polymers |

New methodologies for synthesizing conjugated polymers will be described. One example entails the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of dibromo Dewar benzene followed by dehalogenation of the corresponding polymer to afford trans-poly(acetylene) with high stereopurity. The mechanism of the transformation along with adaptation of the methodology to access multiblock derivatives will be described. In another example, a series of cyclobutenyl-based monomers outfitted with different functional groups was obtained through the ring-opening esterification of Dewar lactone. A novel ROMP / elimination sequence afforded a new class of poly(diene)s, which displayed physical and electronic properties in a manner that depended on the functional groups present in their constituent monomers.
